Obituary: George, Phyllis

Phyllis George (Whittle)
November 29, 1912 — May 8, 2017

After a long and very full life of 104 years, Phyllis passed away peacefully at her residence at St. Ann’s Nursing Home in Saskatoon, Sask.

Phyllis was born at Hanley, Sask., on the farm of her parents. She grew up in the area until she was 16, when she then went away to finish her schooling and attend Normal School in Saskatoon.

Once receiving her teaching certificate, she was employed as a teacher in several small schools around Saskatchewan. She taught at Zid School, just east of Kenaston for four years. It was during that time she met her future husband, Peter George. And in 1942, they were married.

They eventually settled five miles west of Kenaston, where they farmed and raised their family and in later years, retired to Kenaston.

Phyllis is survived by: her son Don (Gloria) George, their children Deanne (Al) Bleackley and Jason (Shauna) George; her daughter Norma Nordquist (Byron Vicars), her children Blaine (Sue) Nordquist, Jon (Candace) Nordquist and Adrienne (Stu) Harrop; son-in-law Barry Firby, his children Chad (Regan) Firby, Renee Firby and Mackenzie Firby; as well as 15 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Phyllis was predeceased by husband Peter George in 1973, son-in-law Jerry Nordquist in 2005, and daughter Chris Firby in 2012.

Service will be held Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 2 p.m. from Kenaston Place, Kenaston, Sask. Pastor Gene Whitehead presiding. Burial to follow at Kenaston Cemetery.

McPhee, Audrey Blanche (Peggy)
August 12, 1928 — May 5, 2017

Peggy was born in Hanley, Sask. She passed away peacefully in Polson Extended Care, Vernon, B.C., with her children at her side. She is predeceased by her husband Roy, her mother and father, and all her brothers and sisters. Peggy is survived by Jeanette, Larry (Donna); grandchildren Craig and Rob; one great-grandchild Karsen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The service is to be held in Hanley, to be announced at a later date.

With sadness, the family of Mildred Nielson announces her passing on April 19, 2017 at the Herb Basset Home in Prince Albert.

Mildred was born on the family farm in the Aylesbury district on Sept. 30, 1920 to Almer and Elsa Elliot. She attended school in Aylesbury with her three siblings and later travelled to Moose Jaw to attend Normal School. She taught briefly in country schools before moving to Nova Scotia where she married Jens Nielson on Oct. 28, 1943. Their first daughter Lynne was born there. Upon Jens’ discharge from the Air Force they returned to Saskatchewan and began farming. Soon after they welcomed Nadine and James to the family.

Mildred enjoyed gardening, genealogy, knitting, sewing, painting and L.O.B.A. as well as many other activities. She was very involved with the United Church and continued to attend Sunday services until she moved to Weldon. She had a smile for everyone and always had time to stop for a quick visit. Mildred and Jens were involved in both breeding and racing standard bred horses. In later years they enjoyed travelling with family and friends and were fortunate enough to visit Japan, Australia, Hawaii and many parts of both Canada and the U.S.

In 1985 Mildred and Jens retired and left the farm, moving into Craik where Mildred continued to live until moving to the Weldon Villa Care Home in 2010. She lived there for just over three years and was fortunate to make many new friends and spent many happy hours visiting and playing cards.

Mildred is lovingly remembered by daughters Lynne, Nadine (Wayne) Steen and son James (Connie) Nielson; grandchildren Colin (Angie) Steen, Todd (Cam) Steen and Quinn, Maren and Conlan Nielson; and four great-grandchildren, Erik, Luke, Gunnar and Haakon Steen. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mildred was predeceased by Jens, her parents and siblings Arvid, Eldeen and Clarence.

A Celebration of Mildred’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements in care of Hanson’s Funeral Home.

Kerpan, Paul

Paul Nicholas Kerpan passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at St. Ann’s home in Saskatoon. Paul was born on the family farm at Kenaston on Dec. 20, 1919, one of 12 children born to Paul (Sr.) and Mary (Yelich) Kerpan. Paul was a man of the land, starting farming at an early age. He married Helen Krpan of Bladworth on March 7, 1943. They kept busy with work most of the time, but enjoyed visiting with friends and family and going to the local Sports Days. In 1979, they retired to Outlook where they lived for 17 years. During their retirement, their love of the land transitioned from farming to gardening, and they made time to take a few trips. Due to health issues, they moved to Saskatoon where they lived independently for awhile. Both Helen and Paul spent their last years under the wonderful care of the staff at St. Ann’s Care Home.

Paul is survived by his four children: Karen (Wayne) Jess, Margaret (Ken) Baird, Allan (Melanie) Kerpan and Darrell Kerpan; brothers Martin (Doreen) and Bill (Lillian) Kerpan, 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Paul was predeceased by his loving wife, Helen; granddaughter Danille Kerpan; brothers John, George, Tony, Matt, Joe, Louis; sisters Eva Metheral, Mary Horan and Anne Pavelich.

A Celebration of Paul’s life was held at St. Andrew’s church in Kenaston at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2017. Arrangements in care of Hanson’s Funeral Home, Davidson. 
For friends so wishing, donations in memory of Paul may be made to the St. Andrew’s Cemetery fund or a charity of their choice.

Eugene (Gene) Anton
Oct. 8, 1944 — March 8, 2017
Gene passed away at his home in Sherbrooke Community Centre, Saskatoon, with his sister Fran and brother-in-law Bill by his side.
He was predeceased by his father and mother Eugene and Anna, brother Hugh and sister Julie Taylor.
He is survived by sisters Fran (Bill) Moncrief, Dorothy Goldsborough, Betty (Len) Benko, Judy (Doug) Parker; brothers Bill (Shirley), Bernie, and several nieces and nephews.
We will all miss his quick wit and determination in light of the many trials he endured in his life.
A special thank you to Dr. Kurt Roelens and the entire staff at Sherbrooke for the excellent care and love shown to Gene during all his years at the centre.

Obituary: Hoehn, Jesse

Jesse Hoehn, age 25, passed away suddenly on a construction site south of Davidson, Feb. 13, 2017.

Jesse was born at Providence Hospital in Moose Jaw, Sask., on Aug. 7, 1991. He began his life in Palmer, Sask., and attended school in Gravelbourg for grades 1 and 2. In 1998 the family moved to Assiniboia where Jesse attended Grade 3. The final move to Davidson was in 2000 where Jesse completed his schooling.

Jesse’s interest in sports came at a young age, including hockey, skateboarding, volleyball and baseball. Jesse also enjoyed dirtbiking, quadding, hunting and fishing.

Snowboarding was his biggest passion. When he wasn’t snowboarding he was watching videos of snowboarding, or planning the next trip with his buddies.

After his schooling, he worked for the Town of Davidson, RM grader operator, Richardson Pioneer and finally with Russell Redi Mix.

Jesse had a talent for fixing and working with equipment and machinery. He could also fix pretty much any electronic or computer issue in minutes.

Jesse enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was quiet, fun loving, energetic and a dedicated guy.

He was close with his sister Chelsey. On Dec. 19, he became an uncle for the first time to twin boys, Rhett and Jase Robertson. Jesse was afraid to hold the babies at first, just the week before his sudden death he finally felt confident enough to hold Rhett. He was able to feed him his bottle and Chelsey said he had the biggest grin on his face. Unfortunately, there is no picture of this precious moment and they will never get to know their Uncle Jesse.

There are so many stories to share about Jesse. Please share them with each other and don’t let his memory fade.

Jesse is survived by his parents, Mike and Carol Hoehn; sister, Chelsey (Robert) Robertson and children Rhett and Jase; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Jesse’s life was held Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Davidson, Sask.
