Feb. 18, 1939 – Aug. 16, 2026
On a bitter February day in 1939, Glenys Meta Lockwood was born. She was the eldest daughter of Eugene and Reta Lockwood, later joined by her brothers, John and Robert (Bob), and her sister, Jill, who completed the family. Glenys grew up on the farm northeast of Davidson; a place she called home for more than 60 years. Glenys started school at Concord School and later attended Davidson High School. Many stories generate laughter of the adventures she shared with her friends and her cousins. At one of the countless dances the friends attended, she met a quiet young man from Loreburn. After high school, Glenys attended Teachers College in Moose Jaw and completed her teacher training in the spring. When her father Eugene passed away suddenly, her plans to teach in the Northwest Territories changed, and she accepted a teaching position at Prairie College School, west of Davidson. At another dance, the young man from Loreburn proposed, and the rest is history.
Glenys (Lockwood) Smith had a new husband; they were married Dec. 28, 1959. Ken and Glenys settled on her family’s original farm Northeast of Davidson and started farming, raising their family. Daughter Marlis, Sons Clinton and Blaine arrived to complete their family. Family was a priority to Glenys; no effort was too much. The nieces and nephews spent holidays at the farm with Aunt Glenys and Uncle Ken. The farm became a busy place with motorbikes, ski-doos, and Go-kart always on the move. Friends were also always welcome; there was an ever-changing flow of company, whether at home or at the cabin at Etter’s Beach, and the door was always open. Many have a favourite food she made: Fried Chicken, Butter tarts, or a wide variety of pies only start the extensive list.
Over the years, Glenys and Ken travelled all over Canada, The Caribbean and the U.S. Mom really enjoyed Hawaii and had included it time and time again in their travel plans. Disneyland was a favorite family holiday. May and Al Barr, RoseAnne and Frank Dietz, Lee and Dale Bristow, Laurie and Val Lockwood, Hugh and Bea Rowe were only some of their travelling companions. Later Mary Ann Chomyson joined Glenys on a few adventures.
Glenys was committed to the needs of people in the community and province. She had numerous interests and served on committees and boards throughout her lifetime. She was a school bus driver over 20 years; a councillor for the R.M. of Arm River for over 20 years; served as a Trustee for Carlton Trail Regional College; served on the Saskatchewan Lands Appeal Board for over 7 years; served on the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Committee 2 years; was the Ward 6 Board member for Midwest Health District; was a founding member and Chairperson for the Davidson and District Health Foundation; Board Member of the Davidson Medical Center; a Trustee of the Davidson Regional Comprehensive Health board, (which was involved with the Health District Formation); Trustee for Arm River Housing Corporation (Prairie View Lodge) and was involved in the amalgamation of the Davidson Union Hospital and Arm River Housing Corporation. In addition to the above, she had countless involvements with the community of Davidson. She was on the United
Church Social Committee, executive and taught Sunday School; a member of the Trenton-Concord club; a member of the Rebekah Lodge; Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star; a member of the parents committee with Scouts and Guides, Baseball, Curling, she was a 4H leader and a Red Hat member. In 2005 Glenys received the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal, which was awarded to residents who made significant contributions through leadership, voluntarism, and community involvement.
As Glenys became a mother-in-law, she gained more people to love and hold dear. The addition of the in-laws, Linda, Cheryl and Louis, meant there were grandchildren to love! She was so excited to love and spoil her grandkids, Rychel, Reece, Parker, Sydney, and Ken. She went all out on every holiday season to make it special for each one of us.
Glenys was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; parents, Eugene and Reta; brother, Bob; and brother-in-law, Dennis Knaus. As well as Ken’s family: Vera and George Smith; Lloyd and Cecilia Smith; Terry and Shirley Brusch; and brother-in-law, Oran Reiman.
Those who hold Glenys’s memory dear are Marlis and Louis (Duff); Clint and Linda (Smith); Blaine and Cheryl (Smith); grandchildren, Rychel Smith and Thea Pearce; Reece Smith; Parker Smith; Sydney Smith; and Kenneth Duff. Glenys is also survived by her brother, John and Elva Lockwood; sister, Jill Knaus; and sister-in-law, Sharon Wilkins. Many extended family members and friends also treasure Glenys’s memory.
A Celebration of Glenys life will be held Friday, Oct. 16, 2026, at 11:00 am in the Davidson United Church, Davidson Sask.
