Viterra to buy GDT

STRONGFIELD—Shareholders will decide next month whether to approve the sale of Gardiner Dam Terminal (GDT) Ltd. to Viterra.

The purchase price is estimated at between $27.9 and $30.3 million.

GDT’s board of directors announced Friday, Nov. 16 that the company has entered into an asset purchase agreement with Viterra, which already holds a 50 per cent interest in GDT as per a joint venture agreement entered into 18 years ago when the farmer-owned terminal was built. The sale of the remaining 50 per cent of the assets will terminate this joint venture agreement.

The purchase agreement includes all the assets associated with the grain handling aspect of the business and the crop inputs and production side of the business known as GDT AgServices Ltd.

GDT operates a grain terminal near Strongfield, along the CP Rail line and has crop production facilities at Strongfield, Broderick and Tullis.

The terminal’s service area covers a 60-mile radius around Strongfield, including the communities of Craik, Davidson, Kenaston, Eyebrow, Central Butte, Dinsmore, Beechy, Hanley, Outlook, Elbow and Loreburn.

Viterra has advised GDT that it intends to sell GDT AgServices and all its crop production assets to Riverbend Co-operative Ltd. under a separate agreement.

GDT and GDT AgServices currently employ 24 people.

Twenty-two out of the 24 people will be offered positions by either Viterra, in the grain handling facility, or Riverbend Co-op at the three crop input locations, said Shawn Graham, chief executive officer, GDT AgServices. He said the two exceptions are management positions.

Obituary

SCHWIERTZ, Rose

1940-2018

Rose Shwiertz passed away peacefully on Nov. 18, 2018 at the Extend a Care in Moose Jaw SK., at the age of 78. Her parents were Emilien and Phylis Tichit. Rose is predeceased by husbands Cyril Van De Wiele, Steve Hnatiuk & Tony Schwiertz. She leaves behind two sons Sydney Van De Wiele (wife Laurie) and George Van De Wiele (wife Joanie); two daughters Valerie Childs (late husband Karl) and Jean Cooke (husband Paul); nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two brother’s and three sisters. Ugene, Edith, Yvonne, Teresa and Steven. As well as numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place in Saskatoon, SK. A service will be held for family and friends at a later date. RIPPLINGER: REV. FR. STEPHEN

Mar 10, 1924 – Nov 8, 2018

With sadness, we announce the death of Fr. Stephen Ripplinger on Nov. 8, 2018. Fr. Steve was born on March 10, 1924 to Stephan & Catherine Ripplinger on a farm 1 mile south of Kendal, SK. Fr. Steve is survived by his siblings: Bernie Ripplinger (Angie), Edwin Ripplinger (Donna) &Bernadette Agi; brother-in-law Walter Rog, sister-in-law Clementine Ripplinger as well as many nieces nephews and friends. As well, Father Steve leaves to mourn Joan – the other half of the “team” – who worked with Father in Moose Jaw at Church of our Lady and Sacred Heart Parish in Davidson. For 45 years Joan wore many hats: parish worker, secretary, liturgist, confidante, companion and caregiver. Father Steve spent three years in the army in the Ordinance Corps in Montreal, working in the dock yards loading ships carrying war supplies to USSR ports.

After the war, Fr. Steve entered St. Joseph Seminary in Edmonton for three years and then four years in Regina Cleri Seminary. Fr. Steve was ordained in 1953 as one member of the largest ordination class ever in the Archdiocese of Regina. After various early postings, he became pastor of Ceylon and the missions of Tribune and Trossachs, where he was for 15 years. Following this, Fr. Steve was co-pastor at Little Flower Parish in Regina. In 1971 -72, Father obtained his Master’s degree in “Pastoral Counselling” from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa and he was often sought out by individuals and families for help. On Aug. 1, 1972, Fr. Steve was appointed Pastor of Church of our Lady in Moose Jaw, where he served for 16 years. In July 1988, Father was transferred to Davidson parish for eight years. Throughout his 60 years of pastoring, Fr. Steve was always involved in the community in which he lived; he promoted and supported the C.W.L. in his parishes, was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and the Legion. Fr. Steve was an enthusiastic sportsman and outdoors man – belonging to wildlife groups and receiving numerous trophies for fishing, hunting, bowling and curling and became quite a good taxidermist and painter. Fr. Steve retired as a parish priest in 1996 and moved out to his cabin at Diefenbaker Lake. He then served the mission of Davidson at Elbow until he was 90 years old. Throughout his years of priesting, Fr. Steve was a “people” person. He treated everyone equally, no matter their status, making all feel welcome and important. Because of this, people have loved him and remembered him. Prayers were held on Wednesday Nov. 14, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass Of Christian Burial on Nov. 15, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Cathedral, Regina, SK. Interment was held in the Kendal Community Cemetery, Kendal, SK. For those wishing donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation. KLENK: Janet Lila (nee Flostrand)

April 14, 1964 – Nov 4, 2018

Janet was born to George and Bernice (Abrey) Flostrand. She was the last of six children. Janet lived on the family farm southeast of Venn. When her Dad died in 1973, her Mom moved the family to Imperial July 1974. Janet took the rest of her schooling in Imperial and graduated in 1982. Janet furthered her education in Moose Jaw, she took a technical course in bookkeeping and accounting.

Janet and Kelvin started dating in 1979. She married her high school sweetheart on June 9, 1984. Then along came their children Kyle in 1986 and Krystal in 1988.

Janet stayed at home raising her children. She also volunteered on Imperial Ambulance, did bingos to raise money to redo the old hospital to the center it is now. Janet also drove family and friends to doctor appointments in the city.

Around 1998 Janet started working at the Imperial Hotel. It was a perfect job for Janet because she always was a night owl. She worked there until she started her battle with cancer.

In 2015 Krystal married Ryan Pott. Kade Chabot became the first grandchild. In 2016 Edith Lily was born. Edith was the apple of grandma’s eye. In September of this year Kyle married Serena Allen at Spruce Grove, Alberta.

Family was always very important to Janet. When Janet passed away her loving family was with her.

Janet was predeceased by: her parents: Bernice (Abrey) and George Flostrand, step-father Leroy Isherwood, sister Judy, brother Dennis, step-nephew Troy, brother-in-law James Thomas, parents-in-law: Rose and Adolph Klenk and brother-in-law Allan.

Janet is survived by her loving husband Kelvin, children: Kyle (Serena) and Krystal (Ryan), grandchildren: Kade and Edith, sisters: Karen (Bill) Burnett and Bonnie Thomas and brother Murray (Shirley Klenk). She is also survived by her in-laws: Steven (Gail) Klenk, Sharon (Dave) Measner, Rodney (Lisa) Klenk, Chris (Glen) Monaghan as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial donations may be made to Long Lake Valley Integrated Facility or the Saskatoon Cancer Centre.

Andreas, Stephen

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Stephen David Andreas on November 8, 2018 at the age of forty seven. He was predeceased by his mother Jacqueline, his father Frank and his mother-in-law Bernice Jaremicki, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Stephen is survived by his partner Cindy, daughter Paige, son Jaden and his three brothers Kelvin, Trent, Robin and their families. Born September 1, 1971 at the Craik Union Hospital, Stephen was raised on the family farm, east of Girvin. Educated in Davidson, Stephen went on after high school to further his post secondary at SIAST in the field of Heavy Duty Mechanics, before returning to the Girvin area to be involved in the farming operation. The farm would eventually expand to become a livestock venture. Stephen’s passion for helping people would ultimately be the driving force behind him establishing a second business, Dark Knight Towing. Stephen was a generous and loving person who touched many in the short time he was allowed to be here with us. As a loving partner, great father, loyal friend, helpful neighbour and little brother, Stephen’s passing leaves a deep wound in all who knew him. With arrangements entrusted to Hanson’s Funeral Home in Davidson, funeral services were held on November 14, 2018 with the interment following at the Girvin Cemetery. Those wishing to do so, may make donations to a trust fund set up for Paige and Jaden at the Credit Union in Chamberlain, Saskatchewan.
