Simonsen, Marlene M.

December 18, 1949 – July 15, 2021

It is with sad hearts that the family of Marlene (née Prpic) Simonsen announces her passing, which occurred at Royal University Hospital, in Saskatoon.

Marlene was the daughter of Joseph and Isobel Prpic. She grew up in Kenaston, SK, with brothers Melvin (Pauline), Murray (Réjeanne), Merle (Dorothy), and sister Bette (Ernie) Matycio.

She married Larry Simonsen of Hanley, SK in 1968. Larry ran a Shop-Rite grocery as well as an SGI agency. Marlene quickly learned the ropes of both businesses and worked alongside her husband.

Marlene spent years volunteering as a member of the Canadian Royal Purple organization and as a member of the Hanley school board. More recently, she gave her time to the Hanley Housing Authority.

Marlene and Larry had a son, Christian, in 1969 and a second son, Craig, in 1971. The boys played all the sports that a small town has to offer, and Marlene enjoyed watching them on the ice, on the ball
diamonds, in the gyms – wherever. Marlene had a passion for curling in her younger years. She was a tremendous cook and a green thumb in the garden.

Marlene’s house was meticulously kept; she hosted hundreds of suppers and family holidays throughout the years.

Chris and wife, Jodie (Norrish), gave Marlene two beautiful grandchildren, Kirk (Rebecca) and Taylor. Craig and his wife, Dominique (Bouvier), contributed three more: Samuel, Sophie and Madeleine. Grandma Marlene positively adored following her grandchildren’s activities. Be it dance recitals or volleyball tournaments, Hilltops games or hockey games, Marlene and Larry drove far and wide to be present at the grandkids’ events.

Marlene was predeceased by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her siblings, children and grandchildren.

Marlene passed away of cancer after a courageous battle. Donations to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency or the Hanley Fire Hall are greatly appreciated.

A private ceremony for friends and family will occur at a later date.

Haight, Cecil Bernard Lloyd

Age 90, passed away peacefully into Glory, July 10, 2021, with family members by his side at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

Lloyd, as he was known, was born November 11, 1930 to his parents
Floyd and Elise in Hawarden, Saskatchewan. He grew up on the family farm near Hanley, Saskatchewan.

Lloyd was the oldest of five children- Glenn, Alan, Lucille and Jim. As a boy, he kept busy working in the large family garden, caring for animals, milking cows, selling cream. His early education was at Blue Hill School, a small country school, located east of Hanley.

As a young man, Lloyd participated in the 4H grain club, and attended the Saskatoon and Regina exhibitions submitting grain samples and judging livestock. He enjoyed helping with renovations on the family home and was very handy.

Lloyd enjoyed hanging out his cousins and playing cards with the neighbourhood young men. Lloyd loved learning and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, School of Agriculture. He worked for other famers including his Uncle Ralph’s dairy farm near Saskatoon. He continued helping on the family farm, eventually establishing his own farm in the Hawarden area and worked closely with his brothers Glenn and Alan.

Lloyd was outgoing, considerate, faithful, generous and hardworking, and loved farming. He enjoyed social activities such as skating, square-dancing and trips to Hawaii with friends.

Lloyd had the rare ability of telling a story multiple times in the same conversation. He loved to talk and share his opinions. Lloyd will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his partner/companion, Marian, of 25 years, his brother, Alan (Violet), sister, Lucille (Gerry), his Aunt Fern and numerous cousins. Lloyd had no children of his own but has eleven nieces and nephews who love him dearly.

Lloyd was predeceased by his parents Floyd and Elise, brothers Glenn and Jim.

VANGHEL, Donald (Don)

July 31, 1948 – July 12, 2021

We are heartbroken to announce the loss of Don. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

He was married to the love of his life, Dot (Hudson), for 52 years. He was a devoted Father to his kids Clint (Kara) and Chantel (Jamie Connolly) and an amazing Grandfather to Hunter, Addisyn, Anika, Bryttin, and Korven.

His grandkids were his whole world, his pride and joy and they had him wrapped around their fingers. Grandpa Don would do anything for them and was always eager to spoil them.

Don knew everyone and loved to visit. It was hard to go anywhere without him running into someone he knew and needing to catch up with old friends or acquaintances (or make new ones). Everyone that met him loved him.

He was always willing to help others or lend a hand… as long as he could be the boss! He loved to be the boss!

He was a role model and mentor to many. He loved to shape little minds, much to the dismay of many parents. His nephews and nieces always looked up to him, he was the fun Uncle.

He was a father figure to many. He was an “adopted” Dad/Grandpa to many kids over the years.

Don was always joking around, laughing and telling stories. He loved to be surrounded by family and friends. He loved spending his spare time at the cabin or doing anything outdoors. He loved fishing,
hunting, quadding, snowmobiling and golfing. He could not sit still; he was always busy doing something (unless it was to sneak in a quick nap).

He was always up for a holiday whether it was Vegas, Disney or on a beach somewhere hot.

Don was a tough, dedicated, hardworking man. He grew up on a farm in Davidson and moved to Saskatoon in 1967 to become a Journeyman Carpenter. He worked in construction for a few years
before starting his own company, ATEL Concrete in 1980 with his brother Barry. Don was a perfectionist and would not leave a job half done. He had an amazing memory and could remember every detail of every job they ever did. He also farmed full time until 1999.

ATEL was his whole life but his heart was always on the farm and riding in a tractor.

Don loved life, family and friends. There are many stories and loving memories of him over the years.

We will forever treasure the time we had with him.

There will be a private family interment entrusted to Hillcrest Funeral Home.

Condolences may be left for the family by visiting www.hillcrestmemorial.ca

A big thank you to Dr. Shaw and his team at RUH.

Donations can be made in honour of Don’s memory to RUH Foundation’s Mission Possible: Operation New O.R. (103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon SK S7N 0W8).

Scott, GENEVIEVE (nee Hammer)

Mrs. Genevieve Scott (Hammerer) beloved wife of John (Jack) passed away peacefully on July 3, 2021 at the Davidson Health Center at the age of 85.

Jenny was born in Humboldt on July 11, 1935 to parents Eugene and Emma Hammerer. She was raised on a farm north/west of Carmel, along with her 2 brothers: Donald and Eugene Jr. and sister Deanna.

After she finished school, she applied for a job at the Davidson Hotel and off she moved to Davidson.

Jenny spent some time in BC with a friend picking strawberries. She met Jack while working in Davidson and they married on April 25, 1958.

Jenny was a fulltime homemaker and together they raised 3 children: Wade, Tammy and Robert. Unfortunately, Robert passed away in 1972.

Jenny was an active community member. She belonged to the Kinettes, was a leader in the 4-H Club and was very involved in the Davidson Agriculture Society. Her love was horticulture.

In 1977, Jenny was hired as a page at the Davidson Public Library. She worked with Myrtle Matchett until Myrtle passed away in 1978. Jenny then took on the role as head librarian and worked with Janet
Lloyd. Jenny loved working in the library. She was a passionate reader and loved visiting with all the patrons. Jenny and Janet were very dedicated to their work at the library, decorating it up for every season.

Jenny loved crafting. She was noted for all the dough dollies in Davidson and area. She also started oil painting. She painted on everything imaginable from canvas to eggs to rocks. Soon woodcarving caught her attention. Nothing stopped Jenny from
trying something new. Her birds and animal carvings won a couple awards at some of the shows in Saskatoon. She even convinced her friend Eileen McRae to join her in the basement to carve. You could always find the two of them carving, playing cards, painting their carving or just having coffee.

While doing all her crafts, she was also busy with her beautiful yard full of colourful flowers and a bountiful garden. Nothing stopped her, not even as her mobility got worse.

Her love was visiting and sharing a coffee with all her close friends. There was always time for a visit. She looked forward to the holidays when the whole family would appear. We all squeezed in the house
some place as the family grew and grandchildren and great grandchildren appeared.

Jenny is predeceased by her parents: Eugene and Emma Hammerer; son Robert; brother Eugene Jr.; grandson Aaron; sisters-in-law Elsie Scott, Margaret McPherson, and Elaine Scott; brothers-in-law: Bernie Faucon, Gordon Scott and Lloyd McPherson.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband John (Jack). Son Wade (Susan) and their children Monica (Farren) and John (Yvette) and great grandson Owen. Daughter Tammy (Wesley) and their children: Deidre (Tyson), Michael and Marisha and great grandchildren :Kyla, Keastyn and Brynnlee.

She is survived by her brother: Donald (Lorayne) Hammerer; sister: Deanna Faucon; brother-in-law: Dale Scott; and many nieces and nephews.

We will miss her beautiful smile and wonderful laugh.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at the Davidson Health Center for their loving and compassionate care during mom’s last year.

Heinrich (Ubell), PAULINE FRANCES

In the early hours of May 29, 2021 Polly – surrounded by her children – peacefully passed in to eternity.

We’re sure she’s already walked in to the party, hugged everyone at least once and passed a plate of food (for the second time!) to all.

Polly was born the 6th of 9 children to Justinus Ubell and Mary Wagner in the Kerrobert Hospital on March 15, 1937.

Raised on a farm in the Luseland area, and speaking only German until she started school, she was always very connected with her siblings.

In 1958 she moved to Craik to work as a nurse’s aide and soon after, Davidson – which proved to seal her fate as a resident of the community and later (in ‘retirement’) the town. Shortly after arriving in Davidson she met her future husband Ray and they were married 6 months later (October 21, 1959).

The union stood strong for 55 years – in part for sure because he loved her Flapper Pie – until his passing (2015).

She continued to work as a nurse’s aide off and on throughout her married life until retirement in 2000. Polly made this community her home and her heart in so many ways – by contributing endless baking for sales at the Davidson Seniors Centre, Catholic Women’s League or her parish, caring with a thoughtful card or phone call, providing whatever you needed when camping (at Craven it’s said her 1968 14 foot Scamper camper must have been the ‘basement model’ as she seemed to have anything you needed in that thing), and just adding to the caring atmosphere of this community.

It has been said that no one will know what time of year we are
in without Polly’s seasonal decorations.

She was not fond of being on the water or boating and she may not have had a passion for the family fishing trips, but would never be left behind. She did enjoy the time alone and could be found sweeping the wood steps of the cabin and eating sunflower seeds when we returned.

When not in her garden, yard or kitchen, Polly could be found at the card table adding up your points before you’d laid your last card or, barring that, she’d be out in a field trucking grain, providing a tailgate meal (turkey and all the fixings, never less), or both – at the same time.

Polly wanted everyone together, all the time. Nothing brought her more satisfaction and pleasure than to see her family greeting each other with a hearty hug.

Polly is survived by her four children – Grace (Ian; and their children Adrian [Caitlin, great grandson Tristan], Nicole [Dave], and Erik), Arlene (Doug), Nonie, Mike (Susanna; and their children Geena, Jacob and Reggie).

Polly is also survived by sister Rose and brothers Adolph and George. Predeceased by an infant daughter – Betty Catherine (1962) and her husband, Raymond Deidrich (2015). She is also predeceased by sister Wilma and brothers Jacob, Joseph, Justinus Jr., William.

Wherever she is, we know she’s not joined the party empty handed – likely she’s providing the cinnamon buns and is dancing to Charley Pride. Don’t ask her to turn down the volume – she won’t.

Schollar, Eleanor

January 11, 1937- May 16, 2021

Eleanor passed away Sunday, May 16, 2021.

She was predeceased by her husband Glen Schollar, her mother, Elsie Gillespie, and her father, Herbert Gillespie.

Eleanor is survived by her children: Mike (Diane) and their children: Chris (Ashlyn), Hayden and Rail, Justyn (Mandi), Rory and Milo; Blair (Sue) and their children: Shireen (Toby), Colton (Miranda), Madison and Emmett; Garth (Dianne) and their children: Kayla (Darcy) Emmett and Atlee, Shane (Chalcey); Donna (Rick); her brother, Andy Gillespie (Joyce); her sister, May Lindquist; her brother-in-law Chris Heathcote; her sister-in-law, Ellen Schollar, as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.

Eleanor loved visiting with family. Family gatherings were one of her greatest joys. She also enjoyed meeting with her friends for coffee, and having a glass of wine now and then.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Davidson Health Care Centre for the care and compassion shown to Eleanor.

A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 11am at the Craik Cemetery family plot. Arrangements in care at Hanson’s Funeral Home, Todd Lockwood, Funeral Director.

For those so wishing, memorial donations in memory of Eleanor, may be directed to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
