Anderson, Bernadine

Bernadine Barbara Anderson was born to Magdelena and George Sperling, April 17, 1923, on her parent’s homestead near Aylesbury, Saskatchewan. Her parents were of German heritage who immigrated to Canada in the 1900s. Bernie passed away quietly in her sleep on Monday, June 18th., 2018. Bernie was the last surviving, and, youngest sibling of eight – three brothers, Joseph, John, George; and four sisters, Agatha, Rose, Anne and Emma.

Bernie is survived by her loving family, Vida Anderson (Orest Gulaga), Roger (Rosemarie) Anderson, Glorianne Jones, Janine (Lorrie) Webber, Brent (Judy) Anderson, Shelley (Tim) Kreutzer, Aileen (Harry) Kutcher, Dean (Susan) Anderson, Darcy Anderson (Bev Rausch), Kea Rempel; 28 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Bernie was predeceased by her husband, Harvey; son, Ian and great-grandson, Kristian Giddings.

Mom’s childhood was filled with memories of life on the farm including horse and buggy transportation, picking eggs, gardening, herding cattle, pumping water, wandering aimlessly, and homemade ‘everything’.

Mom attended most of her school years at a one-room building called Willow Bluff. She often talked of her competiveness in lessons and activities including geography, spelling, singing, reciting poems and baseball.

Mom graduated from grade 12 and went on to complete a credential from Reliance Business College in Regina.

Mom learned from both her parents, the importance of a deep faith in God. Mom always used her love for and faith in God as a means to everything she did. Regardless of life’s challenges, Mom had a fierce warrior spirit and always tried to stay positive.

Mom was active in gardening, walking and riding her bicycle, right up to when she was about 90 years old.

Many have shared that Mom was an inspiration. Even though we have lost her physically, memories of her will prevail in our hearts and minds as she continues to live on in each of us.

A mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 22nd, 2018, in the St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Craik, Saskatchewan. Arrangements in care of Hanson’s Funeral Home. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church. Craik, Saskatchewan.

Elmer William Werdal

March 15, 1932 – May 27, 2018

On May 27, 2018 Elmer Werdal of Aylesbury, SK passed away at home. Elmer was predeceased by his loving wife, Bonnie. Lovingly remembered by his three children Darrel (Leona), Shane (Laurie), Lori (John) Hansen; his grandchildren Miranda (Greg) Stadnyk, Cora-lee Werdal (Derek Wenger), Brett (Amanda) Werdal, Ashley (Stewart) Hunter, Jesse Werdal, Jessica Gagne, Charlotte (Lasse) Hansen, Daniel Hansen (Camilla Morsing), Alicia Hansen; great-grandchildren Alexis Masch, Joseph Stadnyk, Raelynn Wenger, Hayden Werdal, Hailey Werdal, Benjamin Werdal, Alexander Hunter, William Hunter, Nohr Hansen and Elmer Morsing. Bender, Marvin

BENDER – Marvin Bender of the Melville district, husband of Sherrine Bender passed away April 27, 2018 as a result of a motor vehicle mishap. He was 73 years of age.

Marvin Barrie Bender was born on March 6, 1945 on the family farm in the Loreburn District of Saskatchewan, the fourth of nine children born to Edward and Rose (nee Doelle) Bender.
 He grew up on the farm and attended Cherrygrove School in the district. He worked at an early age for his relatives and later went to Alberta working on Seismograph Crews.

Marvin married Sherrine Hodge on May 3, 1969 in the United Church in Carrot River. The couple moved to various places before they lived in the Stoughton District where they raised their two boys. In 1981 the family moved to the Melville District.

Marvin loved being with his grandchildren and travelling. He also had a love of Hummingbirds and enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Marvin was predeceased by his parents Edward and Rose, in-laws William and Jessie Hodge (nee Hagen), brother’s Harold, Dennis and Rodger, sister Marilyn and nephew Mark.

He is survived by his wife Sherrine, son Michael (Sharlene) and their children Christopher and Jessica; son, Laurie and his children Arden and Devin; brothers and sisters Eleanor, Ronald, Ronna and Valerie as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Melville. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, 2550 – 12th Ave. Regina, SK   S4P 3X1

Callaway, Norman

Norman Callaway formerly of Davidson passed away May 13, 2018, in Saskatoon.

Norman Franklin Callaway was the eldest son of James and Bertha (Vandegrift) Callaway. He was born July 31, 1933, at Simpson, SK. Norm attended Maple Valley School located only one mile from the farm. He started farming in 1951 and also attended the University of Saskatchewan taking Vocational Agriculture.

Norman was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge in 1957, a charter member of the Kinsmen and K40, a volunteer firefighter, and served on a group committee of the Cubs and Scouts. Norm also earned his Private Pilot license in 1974.

Norman also enjoyed restoring old tractors of which he had numerous. Throughout many of his farming years, every July was his annual trek to Crosby, ND, home of the Divide County Threshing Bee. In earlier years, he attended with his brother Bud and friends, and later years with his grandsons Josh and Matt.

Norman met Velma Palmer in March 1957 and by November 1957 they were married in Davidson, SK.  They farmed from Davidson from 1958 to 1966.  In 1967 when Norm’s parents retired to town, Norm and Velma moved to the farm for the summers and back to town for the winter in a house that they had built in 1963. They continued to do this until 1978 when they built a new home on the original Callaway farm.

Along the way, Norm and Velma raised four children.  Debra in 1958, Allan in 1960, Duane in 1962 and Michael in 1967.  In 1980 they received the Family Farm Heritage Award for being the third generation of Callaway’s to continuously operate the family farm since 1907. 

In 1999 Norm retired from active farming and in 2000 rented out the land but continued to live on the farm until August 2017 when he and Velma moved to Saskatoon.

Norm also enjoyed travelling with Velma. In January 1983 to celebrate 25 years of marriage, they travelled to Hawaii.  They travelled twice to Australia in 1992 and 1997, staying in a farming area around Walgett, NSW.

In 1997 they travelled to Florida, touring around Cape Canaveral, Epcot and Disney World, (they may even have gotten Mickey Mouse’s autograph).

Norm will be greatly missed by his wife Velma of over 60 years and his children, Debra (Stuart), Allan (Lillian), Duane (Cindy) and Michael.  

Grandchildren: Brandi (Chris) LaPointe, Nicole MacVicar (Sean), Kim MacVicar, Joshua, Matthew, MacKenzie (Jody) and Chantelle.

Great Grandchildren:  Braydon, Austyn and Kaylie LaPointe.

He is also survived by his remaining siblings, Dorothy Hillestad and Morris “Bud” (Debby).  He is predeceased by his sister, Myra McFie (Jim) and Dorothy’s husband Harold.  He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Obituary

Brkich, Anne

BRKICH, Anne passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on December 27, 2017, at Misericordia Hospital, Edmonton, AB after a short illness. Anne was born and raised on a farm near Bladworth. She resided in Edmonton, Alberta for many years but always considered Bladworth and Kenaston as home. She was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Frances (Zdunich) Brkich, sisters Matilda Brehm and Pauline Webster, brothers Joseph and John, sister-in-law Doris Brkich, brothers-in-law Michael Brehm, Hugh Sheppard and Harvie Webster. Anne is remembered and missed by her sisters Elizabeth Sheppard, Theresa (Barry) Tether, Vera Bencze and Rita (Terry) Anderson and numerous nieces and nephews. Anne’s strong and unwavering Catholic faith was an inspiration for many. She will be lovingly remembered for her kindness and generosity. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Kenaston. Interment Kenaston Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements in care of Hanson’s Funeral Home. Flowers gratefully declined.

NIZINKEVICH, DOROTHY

November 10, 1928 – May 10, 2018

It is with deep sadness that the family of Dorothy Nizinkevich (nee Falkingham) announces her peaceful passing on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at the age of 89, with her loving family at her side. Dorothy was born on November 10, 1928 on a farm near Kenaston. Left to mourn her passing are her devoted husband of 65 years, Joseph; their three children, Doug (Noreen) Nizinkevich, Roger (Wynne) Nizinkevich and Brenda (Greg) Lightfoot; grandchildren Rachel (Justin) and great-granddaughter Jayla Brewer, Shane Nizinkevich (Andy), Janaye (Tony) Chubb, and Tyler Lightfoot. Dorothy loved baking, gardening, crocheting, playing cards, visiting with friends and especially spending time with her family. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Dorothy will truly be missed by those who have had the pleasure of knowing her. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church (114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon).
