Annie passed away peacefully on December 26, 2016 at the Davidson Health Centre.
Anne (Annie) Wakefield, 88, of Loreburn, Saskatchewan, leaves to mourn her son Derry (Charlene) as well as her sister Beatrice and nieces Margaret, Verna, Venus, Tammy and nephew Ralph.
Annie was interred in the family plot in Loreburn, Sask., and a celebration of Annie’s life will be held in the spring of 2017.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and caregivers of the Davidson facility. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Davidson Health Trust Fund, cheques payable to the Town of Davidson.

DAVIDSON — Junior teams from Loreburn visited Davidson School to take on both the boys and girls teams in basketball action on Tuesday.
The girls played first, with the visiting Aztecs holding a slight 18-13 lead at the halfway point and going on to claim a 32-18 win.
Baylee Batza led the scoring for Loreburn with 14 points, followed by Alyssa Glubis with eight points. Jordyn Dorward and Nicole Yakimoski also scored.
Tolu Arowolo was the top scorer for Davidson with eight points, including a three-point shot. Also scoring were McKenna Doell, Halle Herback, Leila McDonnell and Courtney Payne.
Next up, the boys’ teams faced off. Davidson led 19-12 at the end of the second quarter and eventually won with a score of 57-29.
Gabe Charette led the scoring for the Raiders with 12 points, while Deiondre Boychuk had 11 points and Riley Berry scored 10.
Jackson Norrish was the top scorer for the Aztecs with 18 points, while Dylan Glubis, Brennan Graham, Lance Hefervez and Emmitt Hundeby also scored.

DAVIDSON — Basketball season began Wednesday at Davidson School as both the senior boys and girls hosted teams from Outlook’s Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute (LCBI).
The senior boys easily triumphed over the LCBI Bisons. The Raiders led 39-21 at the end of the second quarter and finished with a score of 85-45.
Andrew Read was the high scorer for Davidson with 26 points, also racking up 17 rebounds and five assists.
Parker Smith scored 16 points and Mark Rettger, who recently returned to Davidson, added 13 points to the tally. These included a successful three-point shot for both players.
The senior girls began the afternoon with a tight game against the Lady Bisons.
The Raiders led 21-20 at the halfway point, but LCBI pulled ahead and maintained a slim lead for most of the second half, winning 40-37.
Two players from Loreburn led the scoring for the Raiders. Merkayle Lakinger scored 12 points, while Tori Rendall had six points.

LOREBURN — When lightning struck the Loreburn United Church in May 1948, igniting a fire that destroyed the building, its members faced some difficult questions.
“I can only imagine the horror that went through everyone’s mind the night that happened,” said Keith Forrest, speaking to the congregation on Sunday.
“In the Christian faith the question always is ‘why.’ Why this church? Why now? Why would God let that happen?”
Before long, the church’s members — including Forrest’s father John — turned to the idea of rebuilding. In 1949 they built a new sanctuary on the same site, with people of all denominations throwing their support behind the project.
“The question ‘why’ turned out to be a positive,” said Forrest, “so this community could rally, rebuild and start all over again.”
Forrest himself noted the irony as he spoke to the crowd gathered for the church’s final service on Sunday.
While his father had played a large part in the church’s construction almost 70 years ago, he said, “I’m one of the people that has the honour of selling it.”
A service of closure was held at Loreburn United Church on Nov. 6, marking the end of a 98-year history.
Roughly 50 people were in attendance, virtually all of them middle-aged or older.
The crowd easily dwarfed the church’s usual attendance — between 10 and 15 people on a typical Sunday morning, and sometimes dipping into single digits, especially during the winter months.
Leaders said it is increasingly difficult to find volunteers to run programs or even maintain the building, with more work falling on fewer shoulders.
The church board made the decision several months ago to put the Loreburn building up for sale and amalgamate with Elbow United Church. (A call for tenders was issued in August but has so far been unsuccessful.)
The two churches already share a minister, Rev. Ursula Wiig, and recently they have held services on an alternating basis — one week in Elbow, the next week in Loreburn.

DAVIDSON — Keeping track of eight teams and their busy schedules kept organizers on their toes last weekend.
The Davidson/Loreburn RaiTec hosted its annual senior girls volleyball tournament on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
Team manager Sandra Baldwin said players and coaches have gotten to know each other well thanks to this and other tournaments.
“People were here for more than just volleyball,” she said, adding that six teams stayed overnight in the school, with the canteen team serving breakfast on Saturday.
“It was just a ton of fun,” Baldwin continued. “It was just a really good weekend (with) strong volleyball.”
Kahkewistahaw defeated Elrose in the final on Saturday to take the championship title for the weekend.
The tournament began with round-robin play on Friday night. Pool A teams competed in Davidson, with Kahkewistahaw coming in first place, Elrose in second, Davidson/Loreburn in third and Beechy/Kyle/Lucky Lake in fourth.
Pool B teams competed in Loreburn. Plenty finished in first place, Eston in second, Assiniboia in third and Biggar in fourth.

DAVIDSON — There’s plenty of new faces on the RaiTec senior girls volleyball team this year.
Manager Sandra Baldwin said that five Grade 10 players have joined this fall, taking the place of five Grade 12 players who graduated in June.
Three other players did not return this year, making for a very different lineup, but Baldwin said she likes what she’s seeing so far.
“Things are looking very positive,” she said, adding that they are aiming to get the younger and older players working together and “clicking” as a team.
“We also look forward to doing as well as we can,” Baldwin continued. “It would be nice to make a return trip to provincials, but it’s pretty early.”
The team includes players from both Davidson and Loreburn, and its name comes from a combination of the schools’ teams, the Raiders and the Aztecs.
Last year’s RaiTec team was highly successful, enjoying many tournament wins and capping off the season with a gold-medal win at 2A provincial championships in November.
Coach Tony Baldwin returned to his post this year, assisted by Jacey Sanden. The team has a lineup of 11 players.
