It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce Smith (nee Kent) of Davidson, Sask. announce her passing.
Joyce was born on Glenview Farm in Radisson, Sask. to W.W. (Wall) and Louisa Kent on January 26, 1922 and grew up on the family farm. She received her education at Hopewell and Radisson High Schools and attended Success Business College. Playing sports, especially softball, getting teased by her brothers and working on the farm was how she spent her formative years. She started work at Speers Seed House in Saskatoon and then on to Davidson where she worked for the Co-op. Here she met her husband Vernon Smith and on January 27, 1945 they were married in Saskatoon and later raised two sons, Greg and Rick.
While raising her family, Joyce split her time between working at the post office and the Co-op where she retired in 1975. Between Joyce and Snook they renovated an old farm house and lived in that home that still stands in Davidson. She enjoyed golfing, curling, entertaining family and friends, singing and trailoring to Saskatchewan Parks and other campsites with Snook. She served one term on Davidson town council where she learned you can’t please everyone with your decisions, so you may as well please yourself.
Joyce and Vern after a few years of retirement, sold their house in Davidson and moved to senior’s apartments in Sutherland (Saskatoon). A few years following Vern’s passing, Joyce moved to Swift Current to another senior’s assisted living complex and then on to the Mennonite Nursing Home in Rosthern, Sask., where she was well looked after until her passing on July 16, 2011. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all Joyce’s care givers and the home for the caring treatment they gave to her in the last years and days of her life.
Joyce was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Vern; her parents Lou and Wall Kent; sisters Pauline Adlam and Lydia Baldwin; brothers Don, Bill and Tom Kent and a number of brothers and sisters-in-law; and a niece Cheryl Gray and nephew Kent Maxwell. Left to mourn her loss and celebrate her life are sons Greg (Nadia) Smith of Swift Current, Sask.; Rick (Betty) Smith of Waldheim; granddaughters and great-grandchildren Jaci (Brian) Heinrichs, (Emma Kate and Claire) of Waldheim; Kate (Eldon) Chillog (Piper and Roan) of Lloydminster, Alta.; and Cari Smith of Waldheim and sister Jean Sadler of Saskatoon. Also left to celebrate her life are numerous nieces, nephews and their families, great-nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law and of course good friends.
In lieu of any flowers, the family graciously asks that you make a donation to the Mennonite Nursing Home, PO Box 370, Rosthern, Sask. Hanson’s Funeral Services from Davidson are in charge of arrangements and will be holding a graveside service for Joyce, Monday, July 25, 2011, at the family plot in the Davidson Cemetery.

Helen (Schilling) Manz passed away on July 10, 2011 at the Davidson Health Centre in Davidson, Sask. at the age of 88 years. Helen was born on Dec. 31, 1922 in Medicine Hat, Alta. She married Jim Manz on Jan. 21, 1946 in Davidson, Sask.
Helen received her education in a country school. Her occupations over the years included housekeeper, usher/ticket salesperson at the local theatre, working at Canada Packers candling eggs, working as a clerk at the Co-op and housekeeping at the Prairie View Lodge. Helen attended the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Davidson and took an active part in the church. Helen enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, anything to keep her hands busy. She even took up writing a journal on computer in the last decade. She was very active in her church making quilts to send to charities. With no children of her own, Helen always enjoyed visits with her numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Jim on May 25, 1981. She is survived by her sister Dolly Prpich of Saskatoon; sisters-in-law Shirley Manz and Joan Manz of Davidson and brothers-in-law Johnny (Nola) Manz and Joe Arend of Davidson.
Helen’s funeral service was held on July 13, 2011 at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church with a Lutheran service at 1 p.m. Rev. Daryl Olson officiated the service. Special music was provided by Donna Russell and Gloria Morrison singing “I’ll Fly Away”. Hymns for the service included “One Day at a Time” and “Lord of the Dance”. Organist was Carol Dieno. Reflections were by Janice Manz and Bill Jackiw. Ushers were Ken Manz and Chad Manz. Registers were Betty Lloyd and Vera Eddie. Honourary pallbearers were all friends who shared in Helen’s life journey. Active pallbearer was Milton Schilling.
Interment was in the family plot at the Davidson Cemetery, Davidson, Sask.

• The passing of Shirley Jean Huggins occurred on Saturday, July 2, 2011, at the University Hospital, Saskatoon, Sask. Shirley was 75 years of age.
  She was born April 5, 1936 at home on her parents’ farm in the Kenaston district.
  Shirley was the youngest of seven children born to Jim and Eliza Firby. On November 21, 1959, she married Ray Huggins of Imperial, Sask.
  Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Ray; her brother, Ron Firby; sisters Audrey Matonovich and Janet Crawford; her brother-in-law Matt Pillipow; sister-in-law Lorraine Firby; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
  The graveside funeral service was held at the family plot in the Kenaston Community Cemetery on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 2:00 p.m.

• George Goethals of Moose Jaw, formerly of the Imperial/Davidson area, passed away July 4, 2011 at the age of 88. George was born June 6, 1923 to Jules and Irma Goethals. He was born and raised in the Davidson area.  He took over the family farm in 1962. He also was an implement salesman for Smith Roles in Saskatoon. On November 25, 1952 he married Irene Schnurr, and they had three children, Julian George born in 1954, Kenneth Henry in 1957, and Darlene Beatrice in 1965. George and Irene built a new house in Davidson in 1986 and sold the farm in 1991. In 2008, George retired to Moose Jaw and lived with his daughter Darlene. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, travelling, and spending time with his family and friends. Predeceased by his wife Irene, sons George and Kenneth, and sister Mary Remmington, George will be sadly missed by his daughter Darlene; daughter-in-law Deb (Jim Fincaryk); grandchildren Theo Goethals and Jorde Goethals (Jodi McMillan); sister Sally O’Brodovitch, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service was held at W. J. Jones and Son Chapel on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.  Father Rick Krofchek officiated. • Passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Monday, July 4, 2011 at the age of 77 after a brief battle with cancer. Orville was born on April 26, 1934 in Davidson, Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his parents Irvine and Min (Wilhemina) Ames; his parents-in-law, Erick and Vera Townsend; daughter, Karen; brother, Cecil; sister-in-law; brothers-in-laws; numerous cousins, nieces & nephews. He is survived by his wife Frances, daughter Lori (Mike) Seman, son Randy (Evelyn) Ames, daughter Toni (Colin) Campbell; grandchildren Ryan Amundrud, Karli (David) Haavisto, Alicia Campbell (Kyle), Brody Campbell, Mitchell Seman, Brydon Campbell, Aftyn Campbell, Hannah and Jackson Ames; great-grandchildren Taylor and Jacob Haavisto; extended family Faye and Lorne Lynch, Michael (Trina) Gust and their sons Beckett and Easton, Jolene (JJ) Koopman and daughter Kinley, Preston Lynch; his special companion dog Patch; his sisters Jean (Doug) Turner, Edna Lowdermilk, Marie Hill, Fay Hill, Doris (Ray) Wildfong, Merl (Norm) Callaghan, Lois Caldwell, Fern (Allan) Ripka, as well as numerous sisters, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. Orville received his education at the Kipp School. With his school days behind him Orville decided to farm with his Dad. They farmed together until the early ’70s when Irv retired from farming and Orville took over. He married Frances Townsend in Bladworth on December 29, 1961. They resided on the family farm where they raised their family. Combined with farming, cattle and family, life was busy but happy. When he wasn’t playing in the dirt Orville enjoyed keeping busy in his shop with woodworking, metal lathe work, welding, building bird feeders with disker blades, flower basket stands, picture frames from barn board, and stepping stone stands from harrow teeth. Frances and Orville spent numerous hours refinishing furniture and on occasion teaching courses in carpentry through the community college. In 1998 Orville semi-retired and rented out the farmland. He stayed involved with the farming and cattle operation until 2010. A celebration of his life was held at Davidson Town Hall, Washington Ave., Davidson on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Diane Eurig officiating. Donations can be made to the Bladworth Elks or to the Bladworth Cemetery. Beatrice Eileen (Currie) Russell (1927 – 2011)
Sadly we announce the passing of Eileen on June 26, 2011 at the age of 83 at the Davidson Health Centre.
Eileen was raised in a farming community near Morden, Man. She attended Orangehill and Thornhill schools. Eileen completed her Licensed Practical Nursing in Winnipeg. In 1951, Eileen moved to Davidson to work in the hospital. Here she met her husband Grant and shared 59 years of marriage.
Eileen enjoyed knitting, baking, playing cards and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved to have a good laugh with friends and neighbours and will be remembered as being a generous and caring lady who will be dearly missed.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Grant; daughters, Marilyn (Terry), Cheryl (Kent); grandchildren, Calli, Kenley, Dillon, Raylene and Jordan; great-granddaughter, Brooklyn; sisters, Lenore (Bill), Ruth (Gary); brother, Dick (Myrlene); sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Kathleen; and brother-in-law, Calvin.
Eileen was predeceased by her parents, John and Maude Currie and her brother, Don.

The Celebration of Eileen’s life took place at Davidson United Church on June 29, 2011 with Rev. Diane Eurig, Celebrant.
Interment followed at Davidson Cemetery.
